38: The Troubles of a Master Novelist

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

1- When you get here (2nd floor of Terada Inn) Ryoma hears a man screaming. Choose the top option to go inside the room. Ryoma asks what's wrong and the man tells him he's having trouble with his next story (turns out this guy is a novelist). He introduces himself to Ryoma as "Natsumi Sosaku". After more complaining about not knowing what to do with his next story, he collapses to the ground and then asks Ryoma for ideas for his new book. Ryoma doesn't think he can be of any help, but the man says he's just after some ideas for the direction of the story, to get him started. He tells Ryoma that the story has an animal as a protagonist rather than a human and that the story will be told from a first-person perspective.

He first asks for Ryoma's advice on what the animal should be. Choose the top option to select Cat. He thanks Ryoma for his help and gets to work on his story.

Now leave Terada Inn, then go back inside and enter the novelist's room again. The writer thanks Ryoma again for his advice and rewards him with a Broken Compass (...thanks, I guess?). Apparently he's finished the book already.

He asks Ryoma if he'll help out with his next novel and Ryoma says he will. He says the protagonist for his next story is a school teacher, but he's a reckless young man still in his prime and has only just become a teacher. He adds that this guy is hated by the students and has a load of his own problems in his life as well. He asks Ryoma for advice on a nickname for the protagonist - but the nickname will also be the title of the book itself. Choose the second (middle) option to select Bokuchan. He then gets to work on his story.

Again, leave Terada Inn, go back inside and then return to the room. He tells Ryoma he finished the book. Ryoma seems surprised that he's done already and the guy tells him he's a fast writer (yeah, no kidding!). He tells Ryoma he's had letters from readers telling them what they thought and apparently everyone loved it. The writer rewards Ryoma with Beautiful Silk.

He says he wants to write another story and describes it to Ryoma. He says that one day the protagonist receives an apparent suicide note from a teacher he respects, so he hurries to go to see the teacher, but it's too late - the teacher is dead. Appantly the teacher wrote about his life in great detail on the letter and said he had a friend called "Kei". But the teacher stole the woman Kei loved away from him and married her... Then Kei killed himself. Tormented by his feelings of guilt, the teacher ended up killing himself as well. The writer asks Ryoma for his suggestion for the title of the story. Choose the top option to select Sentiment. The writer thanks Ryoma, saying that fits the subject matter of the book (the sentiments of the protagonist, the teacher and his friend Kei). He then gets to work on his story.

Again, leave Terada Inn, go back inside and then return to the room. He thanks Ryoma again for his help and gives you European Fabric. After the substory is complete, you receive 300 Dharma.

42: "Koshi" Really Is What's Important

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

1- Eat at the Umaiya Udon Restaurant in Fushimi to start up the friendship bar with the shop owner. Then talk to the owner and choose the first option to start the substory.

He tells Ryoma he been worrying about his udon - wondering if people like the taste of it. Ryoma tells him he has nothing to worry about; his Udon is delicious, after all! The owner tells Ryoma he'll give him a meal on the house. Ryoma accepts his offer of his best udon. The man asks what Ryoma thought of it and Ryoma compliments the dish. Ryoma asks the guy if he'll teach him how to cook like that. The owner tells him that the secret is "Koshi". Ryoma thinks he's talking about Koshi in the context of noodle cooking (it's basically the Japanese equivalent of "al dente"), but he says he's talking about the "Koshi" (waist) of ones body - saying it's important to use your waist when mixing noodles... (yeah... they threw in a pretty bad pun for this one) ... He then injures his waist and asks Ryoma to help him out - since his waist is injured he can't do it himself. Ryoma is a bit reluctant at first, but he figures it will help him get better so he helps out. This leads to the "Udon Restaurant Helper" mini-game. This is basically a memory game - it tells you what the orders are (and what buttons to press) on the bar at the bottom end of the screen then it hides them and you have to press the correct buttons in the correct order to do the orders successfully. You can press L1 when it flashes at the top left of the screen to set all the button presses to one single button (for example, it will make all of the orders at the bottom of the screen a single button - like X - which is useful) - this is Ryoma giving a recommendation to the customers, which is why it sets all the orders to the same dish. When you get the orders wrong 3 times, you lose the mini-game.

After the mini-game, you receive 10% of the earnings as well as 250 Dharma. You can also now do the "Udon Helper" mini-game whenever you like by speaking with the owner and selecting the second option.

44: The Lengthy Story

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

1- Go here and interact with the 2 girls standing around talking to each other. One girl is going on and on about all kinds of stuff while the other girl is bored out of her mind. The bored girl tells the talking girl (who we now know is called "Sakiko") that she isn't interested! She complains that Sakiko talks way too much. She then wishes she never bumped into her, saying everyone was right about her (apparently Sakiko is well known in Kyoto for her talking). She storms off saying no one could concentrate on her talking when she goes on all day long. As she runs off, Sakiko calls after her saying she hasn't finished talking yet, then she says to herself "I've done it again...".

Talk to her and she'll complain about how everyone gets fed up with her, saying she talks too much. She asks Ryoma if he thinks she does, but he says he's never heard her talking so he doesn't know. She then asks Ryoma if she can talk to him, saying she'll give him a reward if he's willing to listen. Choose the top option to accept. She goes on about how she never feels like she's talked enough even though everyone gets sick of hearing her after a while and she says she's only satisfied when she can talk - she admits she keeps going on and on without thinking about what the person she's talking to thinks. She then introduces herself to Ryoma and her hobby is... talking with people. She goes on to say that everyone on the streets is fed up with her and she has no one to talk to - apparently everyone just goes past her when they see her. Eventually, Ryoma says "Hey..." and Sakiko asks if he wants a short break. Ryoma says she's already been talking for a long time! He says he already feels he's been listening to far too much, then asks if he can leave. She says no and then reminds Ryoma that he said he would listen to her talk and he shouldn't go back on his word. She starts crying, saying that Ryoma promised he'd listen and tells him again she has no one to talk to. Ryoma gives in, saying he'll stay and listen. Ryoma, thinking to himself, says it should be okay if he just pretends to listen to her until she finishes. Then she says she likes kind people like Ryoma, but hates people who pretend to listen to her talk and just nod every now and then to make it look like they're paying attention. She says she's going to make sure Ryoma really is listening to her by asking him questions about what she was talking about after she finishes. She then says she's just about to start... Ryoma is flabbergasted, thinking to himself: "You mean she's only just starting the real thing!? All this talking she's done already and she's only just NOW getting started!?" (yeah, this woman sure can talk!).

(this is going to be a very brief summary of what she says, because she really does go on and on and on and it will take up way too much room on this page to outline most of what she says)

She says she's noticed she's a lot different now than she was when she was little (different tastes in food, colours, and such). Among the bombardment of words she spits out, she mentions that she hated bamboo shoots when she was a child but came to like them after growing up. She next talks about something wonderful that happened recently - she says she had a childhood friend named "Kotaro", a boy 2 years her junior, and they used to play all the time, but he moved to a far away place and they never saw each other again... Until recently, when they had an unexpected reunion in front of a Tea House.

After she's done talking (/bombarding Ryoma with words), she asks him if he was listening to what she was saying. He says he was. To make sure of this, she asks him questions about what she was talking about. First, she asks him what food she came to like when she grew up. Choose the top option to select Bamboo Shoots. She then asks where she had her reunion with her childhood friend Kotaro. Choose the 3rd option to select In front of a Tea House. Finally, she asks Ryoma if he remembers her name. Choose the bottom option to select Sakiko. She rewards Ryoma with a Golden Stamp. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

45: Another Lengthy Story

map

You can do this after completing the "The Lengthy Story" substory

1- After leaving the area after "The Lengthy Story", return here and talk to Sakiko (you can go into a building somewhere, then leave and she'll be around this area again). She thanks you again for listening to her before and asks if you'll listen to her again. Select the top option to listen to her.

(again, I'll keep this brief)

She goes on and on about this amazing Tea House called "Otake Tea House" that is secretly popular among people in Kyoto. She goes on to mention the dango there - she says they have tricolour dango (3 dango on a stick, each one a different colour) and says it's Red, White and Green (in that order). She then talks about another tea house called "Uji Tea House" and talks about their famous "Amazake". Apparently it saves people's lives (supposedly several hundreds of people) - people who have given up on life smell the Uji Tea House Amazake and are enticed inside, have a drink of it, and then are happy with life again. She then talks about the tea girl at the tea house. Apparently men always swarm there just so they can see her, because she's so cute. She then mentions the tea girl's name is "Sumire".

After she finishes, she asks Ryoma questions about what she said. She first asks what order the colours were in on the tricolour dango. Choose the top option to select Red, White and Green. She then asks what was the thing from Uji Tea House that saved hundreds of lives. Choose the 2nd Option to select Amazake. Finally, she asks you what the name of the tea girl at Uji Tea House is. Choose the 2nd option to select Sumire. She rewards Ryoma with Dragon Tear. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

46: This Is The Final Lengthy Story

map

You can do this after completing the "Another Lengthy Story" substory

1- After leaving the area after "Another Lengthy Story", return here and talk to Sakiko (you can go into a building somewhere, then leave and she'll be around this area again). She thanks you again for listening to her before and asks if you'll listen to her again, saying that this is the last time she'll ask Ryoma to listen to her. Select the top option to listen to her.

(again, I'll keep this brief)

She starts off saying she's fallen in love with her old childhood friend, Kotaro. She thinks men hate talkative women, so she wants to stop talking so much, so she doesn't lose him. She says because of the way Ryoma watches her with such a sulky look on his face while she talks to him, it gave her the idea to talk to a scarecrow, because of the blank expression on a scarecrow. Then she mentions Kotaro's favourite dish is Daikon Asazuke. She next talks about ocean fishing and talks about how she caught a tuna when she was practicing.

Suddenly, Kotaro shows up and says he heard what she was saying and is grateful for her trying so hard for his sake. He says he likes her talkative nature so she doesn't have to stop - he says he wants to listen to her forever (is this guy serious?).

After that, she asks Ryoma questions about what she was talking about before they leave. First she asks who/what she talks to in order to fix her talkative nature. Choose the 2nd option to select Scarecrow. She then asks you what Kotaro's favourite dish is. Choose the top option to select Daikon Asazuke. Finally, she asks what she caught when she was practicing ocean fishing. Choose the 2nd option to select Tuna. She rewards you with a Golden Inro. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

48: Ee Ja Nai Ka

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

Some background information is in order here. "Ee Ja Nai Ka" refers to a series of singing and dancing events that occurred at the end of the Edo period (Bakumatsu period). People repeatedly called out the phrase "Ee Ja Nai Ka" while singing and dancing on the streets in large groups. It's not clear exactly what their goal was (if any), but it's commonly believed they were calling for the reformation of the country due to their singing about politics and such. They'd sing about stuff they don't like such as their hatred of the foreigners who keep coming into the country, or they'd sing about stuff they're happy with, like when things in Japan improved, or calling for change, while constantly going back to their refrain of "Ee Ja Nai Ka". Some call them protests, but they weren't really "protests" so much as they were just dancing while singing about things. The reason I haven't given this title a translation is because the translation can differ depending on the context (what exactly they're chanting about); when singing about stuff they like (such as when the armies of the Choshu domain, who were supporters of the Emperor, seized control of the capital and things became cheaper) it could be translated as "Isn't it great?" or "It's great!". But when singing about stuff they don't like (like their hatred of the foreigners from Europe and America arriving in Japan), it could be translated as something like "Right on!", "Isn't that right!" or "Ain't that the truth!" (eg - "The gods will descend unto Japan as rocks fall on the homes of foreigners. Right on! Right on! (ee ja nai ka! ee ja nai ka!)"). For other chants, it could also be translated as "Who cares?" or "Who gives a damn?". It's just one of those things that is both dependant on the context and it's also at the translator's discretion.

1- Go near this area to trigger the substory. Ryoma sees a group of people singing and dancing. Ryoma asks what the hell's going on and a man says that it's "Ee Ja Nai Ka" (see above). The man explains it's been happening a lot recently, with groups of people calling for the reformation of the country. The man goes on to say that everyone is changing - apparently from the start it was a group motion calling for reformation, but there are a lot of guys just pretending to be supporting that cause now. As a result it has just become a silly dance on the streets. There are even guys in the groups who take advantage of the dancing to steal and cause violence. After the man says that, we see a couple of the guys in the Ee Ja Nai Ka group trying to steal from a shopkeeper. They tell the shopkeeper "Who cares (ee ja nai ka) [if we steal from you]? It's for the reformation of the country". The shopkeeper tells them doing this isn't reforming the country, it's just a nuisance! Ryoma steps in and tell them they can't use the Ee Ja Nai Ka group to just steal things. The two men start dancing and singing "ee ja nai ka", which makes Ryoma join in as well (lol)! The shopkeeper says "Aren't you going to stop those guys?". Kiryu comes back to his senses, saying it's a scary dance because of how it can entice people to join in! Kiryu then fights the two theives.

After Ryoma beats them, they run off and the shopkeeper thanks him, rewarding him with an Exquisite Gear. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

51: The Man Fishing Off The Edge Of A Precipice

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

1- Go here and speak to the fisherman. Ryoma asks what's wrong and the man says he hasn't caught a single fish all day. He loves fishing but he's never once caught a fish and his wife keeps complaining to him about it. He promised his wife he'd bring home a fish today and moans that he won't be able to keep that promise. Then he asks Ryoma if he fishes. Ryoma says he does sometimes, and then the man asks Ryoma if he'll catch one fish for him. Ryoma agrees to help.

2- Go here and do the River Fishing mini-game. It's worth pointing out that you don't even have to do this mini-game if you don't want to; you can buy a fish from the fish market to give to him.

1- Go back here and talk to the fisherman. Select the top option to give him a fish. He thanks you and heads home to his wife. This starts the friendship gauge with him. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

After completing this substory, you can give the fisherman a fish whenever you see him in this same location to increase the friendship gauge.

52: The Junk-Child

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

1- Go near this area and Ryoma sees a young boy talking to himself, saying how everyone shuns him, followed by "Me as well!". He then sees Ryoma and says "Don't kill me!". Ryoma asks him what he meant by "me as well", after all he was talking by himself so what's with the "as well"? The boy says nothing and Ryoma tells him he doesn't have to tell him if he doesn't want to, then apologises for disturbing him. As Ryoma leaves, the boy says "I want to play with everyone as well!". Ryoma sits down with the boy and the boys talks about how his dad is strict and never buys him the toys that all the other kids have. He says earlier the kids were playing with their spinning tops (Beigoma) but he didn't have one so he couldn't join in. He goes on to ask if Ryoma will give him something he doesn't need. He says he'll have anything Ryoma is willing to give him - he says children can play with anything! Choose the top option to give him something.

You can give this kid almost any item in the game (except Valuables and some General Items - like food and drink). Substory is called "Junk-Child" because you just give the boy any old junk you want. Personally, I gave him Scrap Metal because that stuff shows up all over the place in the game.

After giving him an item, it starts up the friendship gauge with the boy. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

After completing this substory, you can give the junk-boy any old rubbish of your chosing when you see him in this same location to increase the friendship gauge.

53: The Woodcutter

map

You can do this after helping the Shinto Priest

1- Go here and talk to the woodcutter on the ground. He tells Ryoma he was cutting wood and hurt his back. Ryoma says this kind of work would do that to you and the woodcutter says he's been doing it for 50 years and until now never once hurt his back cutting wood! He says he needs someone to help him cut wood now, since he can't do it. Ryoma agrees to help him out. He wants Ryoma to cut 20 pieces of wood, if he is able. This begins the Woodcutting mini-game. You can keep going after you cut 20 pieces if you want, but you don't have to for the sake of this substory. After you cut 20 pieces, press X and then choose the left option to quit out of the mini-game. The woodcutter thanks you and gives you 100 Mon for each piece of wood you cut. He asks Ryoma if he'll help him out again in the future and Ryoma says he will if he gets a chance.

After this, the friendship gauge with him starts up. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

After the substory, you can come back to this location and cut wood for the man to build up the friendship gauge (as well as make some money).

1: He Who Dances like a Butterfly

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go to and Ryoma sees a woman being harassed by some guy. Ryoma butts in asking what's all the commotion about and the woman tells Ryoma this guy has been pursuing her, trying to force her to the ground. The guy says he's just after money. The guy then gets some more guys to help him out and a fight against them begins.

After beating them, the guys run off. Ryoma asks the woman if she's okay. She's amazed with Ryoma's sword technique (even though I didn't use a sword in that fight...) saying how beautiful it is and tells him he has talent for dancing. She then introduces herself as the master of the Nichibu Dance Castle. She asks him if he'll come inside to try out dancing.

After going inside, the game explains the Traditional Japanese Dancing mini-game.

After doing the dance game, she tells him he can come down whenever he wants to learn more dancing from her.

You are rewarded with 250 Dharma.

2: God, Buddha, Ebisu

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and a Doshin (type of Japanese policemen in the Edo period) talks to Ryoma. He asks him if he's seen Ebisu in this area (Ebisu = Japanese god of fishermen and luck). The policeman says he's been searching for ages buy can't track him down. Ryoma wishes him luck, saying it's good that he believes in a god. The policeman points out that this "Ebisu" is not a real god - just a con artist who goes by the name of "Black Ebisu". Apparently an old man was tricked out of 30 Ryo, because the con artist told him if he paid him, he'd be blessed. Ryoma says to himself he should try to get information on his whereabouts.

2- Talk to the old lady here and she mentions Black Ebisu - apparently she just bumped into him! Ryoma asks where he went and she tells Ryoma she thinks he mentioned something about going to Temple Street.

3- Go here and Ryoma sees Black Ebisu conning another old man, trying to get money out of him. The man originally tries to offer a low amount for Ebisu's blessings, which doesn't go down too well with him! Eventually, Ebisu settles on 1 Ryo. But before he pays, Ryoma steps in. After the old man leaves (after Ryoma mentions Black Ebisu is a con artist), a fight against Black Ebisu begins.

After the fight, the policeman shows up, saying he's under arrest. Then the old lady Ryoma spoke to shows up. Ryoma tells her the guy is a con artist, but he's been caught now. The old lady doesn't believe him and then mentions that the guy who was arrested isn't the Ebisu she knows! Then Ryoma wonders if the Ebisu she bumped into was the real thing, but then thinks that can't be true!

You are rewarded with 300 Dharma.

3: The Artistic Reception

Rakunai

You can do this after you have completed substory 1 "He Who Dances like a Butterfly" and have played at the singing bar at least once

1- Talk to the lady here and she asks Ryoma if he can perform at a reception for a big-name artist who's lodging here. Ryoma says if he's so famous, then surely there are other people willing to perform for him? But she says everyone is afraid(/intimidated) of him, because of his status! Ryoma asks why she thinks he's capable and she says word is out on the streets about his singing and dancing! Choose the top option to agree to perform for the artist.

2- Go into the building here and select the top option to go inside. After entering, a man asks Ryoma if he wants to drink with him, saying he's come from far away to stay here in Kyoto. Ryoma says there's someone he has to meet - but then he realises this must be the man! Ryoma asks what particular art the man specialises in and he says all of them - drawing/painting, dancing, singing, the lot! He then says to Ryoma he's heard of a singing bar here in Kyoto. After Ryoma tells him there is, he says they should head over there so he can hear Ryoma sing. You now have to play the singing bar mini game. After singing, the man says he's impressed with Ryoma's ability! He then asks Ryoma to go and sing again (but this time you don't have to do the mini-game). He says Ryoma's singing has given him inspiration and paints a picture right there. Ryoma looks at the painting but has no idea what it's supposed to be. The man asks what he thinks of it and Ryoma just says it's great. Then he asks Ryoma what part of it he thinks is great - choose the middle option to select "The Splendid Portrayal of Manliness". The man then asks what other arts Ryoma can do, besides singing and tells him he can dance too. The man then insists on seeing Ryoma dance! You now have to do the traditional Japanese dancing mini-game. After dancing, the man praises Ryoma's dancing abilities. He then asks Ryoma to dance again (this time you don't have to do the mini-game). Again, the man has been struck with inspiration because of Ryoma's dancing! He does another painting, but Ryoma again has no idea what it's supposed to be! Again, Ryoma tells him it's great. The man asks what part of it he thinks is great - Choose the top option to select "The elegance which glimmers at the heroic centre of the piece". After that, Ryoma and the man are confronted by some guys on the streets. They're after the artist, so that they can make money off him by holding him ransom to his family. The guy says he has no family, but they aren't convinced - "Isn't your son a famous artist too!?". Ryoma steps in to stop the guys from taking the artist.

After beating the guys, the artist thanks Ryoma for his help. He goes on to say that, like those guys said, his son was a famous artist. Apparently, many years ago, his son commit suicide. He said that being a master in all fields of art, and his son being an artist as well, the son was inevitably compared to him. His work wasn't valued by anyone and people kept saying he didn't inherit his father's genius. He thanks Ryoma for everything, saying he enjoyed himself today. He gives Ryoma an Ancient Amulet. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

4: The Girl who is Moving House

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- When you get to this area, a boy bumps into Ryoma. He apologises to Ryoma and says he's in a hurry, then runs off. He rushes over to a girl (Miho) and he (his name is Shinta) says he read her letter, asking her is she's serious and she says she is. Go and interact with them and we learn the girl is moving house - all the way to Edo! The boy asks why she's going and it's because her father has a new job lined up in Edo. She says they're leaving as soon as they've finished preparing. He asks why she didn't tell him sooner and she said she just couldn't. They have an argument - she says he's an idiot and doesn't understand and he says he doesn't want to see her any more! He then runs off. Her father arrives and asks her if she has said her farewells to her friend. He says they'll be leaving soon - the palanquin will arrive to pick them up, so she has to finish her preparations. Talk to the girl and she's crying because of the things she said to Shinta - she doesn't want to leave like this. She asks Ryoma if he'll do her a favour - she says if he bumps into Shinta, could he deliver a message to him - "Thank you". Ryoma asks if that's all and she says yes, then heads off to prepare.

2- Go here and Ryoma sees Shinta. Go up and talk to him. Ryoma says he has a message for him from Miho - "Thank you". The boy goes on to tell Ryoma they became the best of friends - he says there are barely any young girls in the area so she had no friends until last year. She always seemed so lonely, so he invited her to play with him. At first she was quiet and didn't speak to him, but after talking to her every day she eventually conversed with him and then they ended up best friends. He said he was teased by other boys for playing with a girl, but he didn't care because she's his best friend. He says she never mentioned about moving house until today, so he thinks she never considered him a great friend. Ryoma tells him about the feelings she was trying to convey to Shinta in her "thank you" - Choose the top option to select "Thank you for being friends with me". Ryoma says Shinta was there for her when she was lonely and she's thanking him for his kindness. On the subject of not saying anything to him about moving house, Ryoma asks him to consider her feelings - Choose the bottom option to select "She couldn't tell you that because you're so important to her". If she had told him, they'd both be consciously aware of it and they wouldn't have enjoyed themselves up till now. The boy says he wants to see Miho one more time and say a proper farewell.

1- Go back here and Ryoma sees Miho and her father about to get into the palanquin and head for Edo. She says she wants to wait a little longer for her friend, but he says they can't keep the guys waiting for too long. As they leave, Shinta shows up chasing after them (how he ended up running from that direction bearing in mind he came from the Shrine I just arrived from is beyond me...). The boy collapses and Ryoma says he'll stop the palanquin for him.

After you stop the palanquin, Miho asks what's wrong and Ryoma tells her someone has something to tell her. Shinta apologises to her for what he said. She also apologises, saying she had always felt she had to tell him about moving, but was never able to say it. She cries, saying she feels she'll never see Shinta again. He tells her not to cry; he wants his farewell with her to be a happy one and tells her he'll grow up to be strong, so she doesn't have to worry about him. Then her father calls out to her, saying they have to leave now. Miho tells Shinta she'll write to him and he says he'll also write - says he'll continue writing to her all his life! Miho thanks Ryoma for delivering her message and rewards him with Rainbow-Coloured Fabric. Miho and Shinta say their goodbyes, then he calls out to her saying "thank you".

You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

5: Tosa Dialect Course

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and talk to the man. He's looking for someone from Tosa. Ryoma thinks maybe's he's looking for him and that he knows his true identity! But then supposes he's just overthinking it. The man sees Ryoma and asks if he's from Tosa. Ryoma says he isn't and the man says he'll never read this letter... He says he got a letter written in the Tosa dialect and he wants to know what it says, but he doesn't understand the Tosa dialect! (mark this substory down under "parts of the game that won't make it into an English version if an English version does get released"). Ryoma then tells him that he can speak the Tosa dialect. The man introduces himself to Ryoma as "Fujie", owner of a Kimono shop, and says he had a customer from Tosa - a young and cute girl named "Okinu", who is exactly his type of girl! He plucked up the courage to ask her if she'd like to be a pen pal with him. But he says the first letter he got from her is in a very thick Tosa dialect! (apparently she wasn't using this dialect when speaking to him in person). He asks Ryoma to help him translate it. Choose the top option to help him out.

This is the full letter:

"Hello Fujie, it's been a long time. How have you been? I'm really loving the kimono I bought from you! I never thought there was anyone around who makes such wonderful kimono. Thinking of you, Okinu."

Now he asks Ryoma to translate bits he's unsure of. First, choose the top option. Then choose the middle option. Finally, choose the top option.

He thanks Ryoma and rewards him with Beautiful Silk.

Leave the area and then come back and speak to him. He says he's got another letter from Okinu and wants Ryoma's help translating. Choose the top option to help him.

The second letter:

"Dear Fujie, thank you for the letter. How are you doing? I'm surprised that you're interested in that. Are you always doing it? Next time we meet up, we'll have to do it together! I've been feeling strange recently; whenever I think of you, I get this thumping pain in my chest. I hope I can see you soon!"

Now he asks Ryoma to translate bits he's unsure of. First, choose the middle option. Next choose the top option. Finally, choose the bottom option.

He thanks Ryoma and rewards him with a Platinum Lump.

Leave the area and then come back and speak to him. He says he's got another letter from Okinu and wants Ryoma's help translating. Choose the top option to help him.

The third letter:

"Dear Fujie, I'm so happy you sent me another letter. These days, I look forward to exchanging letters with you more than anything else. I've noticed that you've become a big part of my life. In the future, even if I stumble in life, as long as I'm with you I'll be fine. That's how I've been feeling every day. I don't like cowardly people, so if you feel the same as me please tell me right away. Yours, Okinu."

Now he asks Ryoma to translate bits he's unsure of. First, choose the middle option. Next choose the top option. Finally, choose the bottom option.

Now the guy says he's heading over to Tosa right away to propose to her!

Leave the area and then come back and speak to him. He says he went all the way to Tosa to confess to her and they are now engaged! He thanks Ryoma again, saying without him he would never have ended up marrying her without his help. He rewards Ryoma with a Fenghuang Feather. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

6: 2 Lies out of 5

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and talk to the 6 guys. A Doshin (Edo period police) is trying to find a criminal, saying two of these 5 men are who he's looking for, but doesn't know who. He says they are a 5 man gang and apparently he had them help out with cleaning at the office, but then they ate his daifuku. He says there was no one else there so it must have been these guys. Apparently of the 5 guys, 2 of them ate the daifuku. Of course they are all saying they didn't do it so 2 of these guys are lying. The policeman asks for Ryoma's insight into this, since he's not clearheaded at the moment because they ate his daifuku. Choose the top option to help him. They then introduce themselves, the first guy is called "Higashihara", the second guy is called "Nishiyama", the third is "Nakagawa", the fourth is "Minamino", and the last guy is "Kitajima". Now you ask each of the 5 guys for information.

Higashihara says that Kitajima is definitely one of the culprits, because he saw him with it himself.

Nishiyama says out of Higashihara and Minamino, at least one those 2 are the culprit, because those 2 were the only guys with keys to the room in which the daifuku was kept.

Nakagawa says Minamino is one of the culprits. He also says Nishiyama is not one of the culprits because he was with him the whole time.

Minamino says Nishiyama is one of the culprits, because he saw daifuku powder on his kimono.

Kitajima says out of Nakagawa and Minamino, one of them is one of the culprits.

After getting info from them all, talk to the policeman and select the top option. Then go and speak to the 2 guys who did it and select the top option - The culprits are the first guy (Higashihara) and the fourth guy (Minamino). After selecting the 2 culprits, confirm your choices with the top option.

After that they confess that the daifuku just looked so delicious and they couldn't resist! Then the other guys give them a telling off about lying, followed by a speech about their friendship. After they leave, the policeman rewards Ryoma with a God Slaying Talisman. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

7: With Pain in the Dance

Rakunai

You can do this in chapter 3 after completing substory 23 "Yokunai Ja Nai Ka"

1- Go here and Ryoma sees yet another "Ee Ja Nai Ka" (see substory 48 for information).

2- Go up to the group and talk to them. Some guys come out of a building and tell them to shut up. The group tells them they are tired of being under their rule (the shogunate). The guys then say they'll just kill the group for going against them, then Ryoma steps in to save the group, starting a fight against the guys.

After the fight, the group tells Ryoma about how they heard rumours that performing "Ee Ja Nai Ka" could change Japan, which is why they are singing and dancing. The group thanks Ryoma for his help and gives him a Heijoshin Towel. After that, they dance again and ask Ryoma to join in (lol). You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

11: He who Knows the World

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and speak to the old man. He mentions he's a teacher and says his students brought in a globe and want him to teach them, but is worried because he's not familiar with a globe. Ryoma mentions he's seen one before. The teacher goes on about how it's important to learn more about the world, particularly in the current times (what with foreigners from all over the place coming in). However, the teacher wants Ryoma to help him out - since Ryoma is familiar with a globe and the teacher isn't (he doesn't want to look like a fool in front of his students, or he'll lose all of them). Select the top option to teach the students about the globe. The teacher introduces Ryoma as his student. Ryoma goes along with it (teacher is trying to save face, so Ryoma is pretending to just help rather than being the one who is actually doing the teaching!). The students start pointing to the globe asking Ryoma what the places are. The first student points to Japan - choose the top option to select Japan. The next student points to China - choose the middle option to select China. The final student asks Ryoma to point out where Great Britain is on the globe - Choose the bottom option. This student has a speech about how brought the globe in because he wanted to be taught at least where Japan was and knows he'll get correct information staying at this school now. The teacher confesses to not having much knowledge of the globe and had Ryoma do the teaching since he does have knowledge and that he should probably leave them. The student appreciates his honesty - the student goes on to say that learning isn't just about stuffing loads of knowledge in your heads - he says his father told him teaching the next generation about how one should be as a person is more important. He says he wants to use the teacher, and his honesty, as an example for how he should live. Turns out the students all still look up to him as a role model! The teacher gives Ryoma a European Cloth. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

15: The Injured Old Lady

Rakunai(/Rakugai)
(this is right on the edge of what's considered "Rakunai" on the map)

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and talk to the old lady. Choose the top option to walk her home. Ryoma asks if she lives alone and she says she does. Her legs have become weak in her old age, so it's hard for her to go out and buy stuff. She thanks Ryoma for his company and the friendship gauge with her starts. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

18: The Shut-In

Rakugai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and interact with the son and mother. They're having an argument over the fact the man never goes outside, hiding away in his room all the time. The mother says he'll never get married if he stays in his room all the time, but the son says he doesn't need a woman in his life. Talk to the mother and she talks to Ryoma about her son and how she's worried about him because he does nothing but stay at home all the time. She asks Ryoma if he'll have a talk with her son, to try and convince him to get out. Choose the top option to accept.

Ryoma goes to the house with the mother and speaks with the son. Ryoma asks the mother to leave, so he can talk with the son man-to-man. Now Ryoma will wonder what to talk about. It doesn't matter what you choose here. Top option is "What are you always doing?", middle option is "Do you have any friends?", bottom option is "What do you like to do?".

Next, choose the top option to select "Open up with casual conversation". Ryoma asks him what kind of girls he's into. The guy is taken aback and Ryoma says he surely has experience with girls and asks again about his taste in girls, but the guy says he has no experience. He says because he's always in the house he's never met with any girls, so he doesn't know what his tastes are. But he says he does have an ideal woman - long hair, beautiful, graceful, kind, will only love him forever, from a rich family, good in bed, good cook and who will support him (lol...). Ryoma points out those are some high standards (yeah, no kidding). Ryoma then goes on to give him a lecture about how he can never expect his ideal woman to have interest in a guy like him - a jobless man who does nothing. The man then says Ryoma is right and says he's never met anyone as straight with him as Ryoma. Next, choose the bottom option to select "give him confidence". Ryoma asks him if there's anything he's good at and he says that there is something at which he never loses to anyone, but he doesn't want to say what it is. The man goes on to say he was into swords when he was little - he used to practice everyday and had some talent for it. He says he wanted to go on to work with swords when he was older... until "that time". He said he saw someone murdered before his eyes - he was killed by a Doshin from behind while running away - that was the first time he saw someone die. He said he realised the sword was for killing people, then he ran back to his room and has been living like that since. He thanks Ryoma for talking with him, saying he has inspired him to change his ways.

After leaving, the mother thanks Ryoma. As Ryoma is about to leave, the mother shouts out to him saying she'll give him a reward, but bumps into someone. The guy threatens her but then Ryoma steps in to help her. But then the son comes out and tells the man threatening her to back off, saying he can't run off or he'll be no good forever. Then some more guys show up and a fight against them starts.

After the fight, the son talks about how he's going to take up the way of the sword once again. The mother rewards Ryoma with Rainbow-Coloured Fragment. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

22: Sonno Joi

Rakugai

Mukurogai (second level (upstairs))

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

"Sonno Joi" was a slogan used during the Bakumatsu period meaning "Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians (foreigners)".

1- Go here and interact with the two men. One of them is a foreigner and the other man tells the foreigner to be careful because there's a lot of hate for foreigners these days. He then goes on to talk about the Sonno Joi movement and again tells him to take care before leaving.

2- Go here and Ryoma sees the foreigner again. He is confronted by a group of guys supporting the Sonno Joi movement and are about to kill him. The foreigner tells them he's in Japan to teach about agriculture, so that the country can grow, so if they kill him here Japan's agriculture won't have any development. They say there's nothing a dirty foreigner like him could do to help the country. Ryoma steps in to stop them and a fight starts.

After the fight, Ryoma explains to them that foreign knowledge could help improve the country. They aren't convinced, saying Japan is for Japanese people only, then say next time they meet they'll go all out on him. Ryoma tells the foreigner that next time he bumps into guys like that he should just run away, because they won't listen to him. The foreigner thanks Ryoma for his help and walks off.

3- Speak to the boatman in Fushimi to travel to Mukurogai. If he's not there, try completing other substories and then come back to make him show up. Ryoma sees the foreigner here - go and speak to him. Ryoma tells him he shouldn't be here alone, with the Sonno Joi supporters out here. The foreigner tells him he wants to meet them once more - to tell them what he thinks about the country, saying they'll understand if he tells them. Then the Sonno Joi guys arrive again and threaten the foreigner. The foreigner tries to explain again, but they aren't interested. Ryoma tells the foreigner to stay back, then fights with the group.

After the fight, Ryoma gives them a lecture on how foreign influence can help the country - saying there aren't really any guys in Japan willing to put their lives on the line for Japan like this foreigner. The gang leave, saying they'll overlook this today.

You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

23: Yokunai Ja Nai Ka

Rakugai

You can do this in chapter 3 after completing substory 48 "Ee Ja Nai Ka"

1- Go here and Ryoma sees the "Ee Ja Nai Ka" again (see info in substory 48).

2- Go here and Ryoma sees 6 guys doing the Ee Ja Nai Ka singing and dancing, while an old lady is in pain on the ground. She says she was thrust to the ground by the group. Kiryu goes up to the group and tells them they can't go around causing trouble for people - they just injured an old lady! They then fight Ryoma because he made them mad.

After Ryoma beats them, they apologise and give Ryoma a Vermilion Cloth. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

26: The Man Enchanted by Swords

Rakugai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and talk to the guy. He says he really wants to see Ryoma's sword. Ryoma shows him and the man praises it. Ryoma thinks he's some kind of expert with swords, so he asks for advice on what needs work on his sword, but the man says he isn't that well-informed; it's just a hobby. Ryoma leaves, but the man stops him, saying he really wants to see a sword called "Kurotetsumaru". This starts up the friendship gauge with him.

You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

30: In a Dangerous District

Mukurogai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go near here and Ryoma is confronted by some guys. They tell Ryoma to hand over some money or they'll kill him. This starts a fight against them.

After the fight, they run off. You are rewarded with 250 Dharma.

31: The Brawler Sumibozu

Mukurogai

You can do this in chapter 3 after completing substory 7 "With Pain in the Dance"

1- Go here and speak to Sumibozu. He tells Ryoma that, if there's anyone you want beaten up, he'll do it for you. After explaining his work to Ryoma, a man shows up looking for Sumibozu, who asks the man what guy he wants beaten. This is the guy Ryoma embarrassed at the end of Substory 7! The man notices Ryoma and tells Sumibozu that he's the guy. Ryoma doesn't remember him at first, but after he tells him about the Ee Ja Nai Ka incident, he remembers. Sumibozu fights with Ryoma, saying he's just doing his job.

After Ryoma beats Sumibozu, the other guy runs away. Sumibozu says he's never met anyone as tough as Ryoma. He says he wants to challenge Ryoma again some day, then leaves.

You are rewarded with 300 Dharma.

35: The Grovelling Beggar

Mukurogai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and talk to the beggar. He asks Ryoma for some food. Choose the top option to give him food. If you don't have any, you can buy some from shops in Fushimi (interestingly, you can also give him sake instead if you want). After giving him food, he thanks Ryoma and the friendship gauge with him starts. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

40: The Man Working up a Good Sweat

Fushimi

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go inside the bathhouse (top option). Ryoma takes off his clothes and gets into a bath. After a while, Ryoma gets out and goes to get his clothes, but notices they are missing! He turns around to see a man carrying his clothes and chases after him.

After catching him, the guy says he never thought Ryoma would go chasing after him in the streets. Then 3 Okappiki (basically like Edo period policemen) arrive and Ryoma tells the theif that his number's up! Ryoma then notices the 3 guys are looking at him and he tells them he's not the thief; the other guy is. "So you must be the guy who's been running naked around the streets, huh!?" one says. Ryoma explains that his clothes were stolen, so he ran after the man. They aren't interested in his excuses and are about to arrest him, but he makes a run for it. Lose the police and then get your way back to the bathhouse without being seen by them.

Ryoma puts his clothes back on and then the police arrive. They apologise for what happened - it seems the misunderstanding has been cleared up. Ryoma asks what happened to the thief and they tell him some other police got hold of him after he tried to get away. Apparently that thief has been stealing clothes from there for a while and the bathhouse attendant gives you a reward for putting an end to it. He gives you a Crystal. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

41: The Inarizushi

Fushimi

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and Ryoma notices a queue for Inarizushi. Go to the back of the line and select the top option to line up. Unfortunately, the man sells out before Kiryu can get some! Kiryu thinks to himself that he'd like to try some of this inarizushi, so he'll come back again another time.

Leave the area and then come back to see a new queue (I went into Terada Inn, went out and back to the inarizushi seller again). Again, go to the back of the queue and line up. Unfortunately for Ryoma, the man again sells out before Ryoma can get some! Kiryu says to himself he'll come back again another time.

Again, leave the area and then come back and get in line. Ryoma finally gets to have one! The man in line behind Ryoma was not so lucky - the seller is out of inarizashi. Ryoma is about to sit down somewhere and eat it, but the man who was in line behind him bumps into him and steals his inarizashi! After shouting out, "That's MY inarizashi!", Ryoma chases after him.

After catching him, Ryoma asks him if he was so desperate to have one that he had to steal it, but the man says the reason he stole it is because his son is bedridden with an illness and has no appetite, after several days he hasn't eaten anything. However, today his son told him he wanted to try the inarizushi from that seller - apparently the son had one once and hasn't forgotten how nice it is. So he went straight out to get in line, but they were sold out before he could get one. Ryoma lets the man have the inarizashi for his son. The man asks if he's sure, and Ryoma says it's no problem (then thinks to himself he can always queue up for it again another time). However, the man tells him it was the chance to get one, because the seller is moving somewhere else to sell the inarizushi! After the man leaves, Ryoma thinks to himself (...I'll just have a dango then, I guess). You are rewarded with 300 Dharma.

47: The Perfume

Fushimi

Mukurogai (second level (upstairs))

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and Ryoma sees a woman waiting for the boat to Mukurogai. Ryoma says it's no place for a lady to go alone. She says she wants some perfume from there - she says men aren't into her and so she wants the perfume to make herself more attractive. Apparently the only place you can get it is from a guy on the black market. Select the top option to tell her you'll get the perfume for her. She gives you 3 Ryo to pay for the perfume. Next, speak to the boatman and travel to Mukurogai. If he isn't there, then try doing other substories - he wasn't there for me at first, but then I completed a bunch more substories and he finally showed up.

2- Go here and speak to the merchant. He mistakingly thinks Ryoma is here to get him, so he fights.

After the fight, Ryoma explains he's mistaken and he's just here to buy something. Ryoma asks him for the perfume and the man gives it to him. Ryoma asks how much it is, but he says he'll give it to him for free because of the trouble he gave him. Ryoma wonders (out loud) if this can really attract men, then the merchant says he can try it out and puts some on Ryoma! After Ryoma takes the perfume off the man, the man just stares at him, before finally saying "I love you"! Look like the perfume works, lol! Ryoma makes a run for it, starting a chase.

1- Run all the way back here after losing him. You can go through the gates to the north of Mukurogai for this chase. Watch out though, because he pops out of nowhere a couple of times during the chase! You have to lose him before you can go to the destination. The woman sees Ryoma and asks about the perfume. He hands it over to her and she thanks him. Ryoma warns her that it can be dangerous, so she should use it with care.

You are rewarded with 300 Dharma.

54: The Postman with no Sense of Direction

Fushimi

You can do this at the start of Chapter 3

1- Go here and speak to the postman (he's wearing a green shirt). Ryoma asks what's wrong and the postman asks for directions. He thanks Ryoma and runs off. Ryoma can't believe he just had to give directions to a postman!

Leave the area and then come back to the same place and speak to him again. He says he still can't find the place and came back here. The postman admits he has no sense of direction! He says he's always done this work with his father, but he has fallen ill and now he's left to do this himself (and he can't do it without his dad). He asks Ryoma again for the directions and Ryoma tells him. The postman thanks him and runs off.

Again, leave the area and then come back and speak to him. Ryoma asks him if he found the place and he says he did this time! The postman is worried that because he can't find anywhere he won't be able to do his deliveries. Ryoma offers to help him out. The postman gives Ryoma a package to deliver. This begins the friendship gauge with the postman. You can come back to him for more packages to deliver and build up the friendship gauge. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

58: Those With Tight-Fitting Skin

Gion

You can do this after you join the Shinsengumi

1- Go here and a man stops Ryoma, asking him if he wants to have some fun in his brothel. Ryoma says no, because he's busy. The man tries to convince him. He talks about how they are so young and their skin is soft and plump like a baby's. He also says they all have "tight-fitting, soft and fair skin". Choose the top option to go to his brothel. Once inside, he gives Ryoma a choice of 3 types and asks what kind he wants. It doesn't make a difference what option you choose.

He asks Ryoma to wait, then a little while later the man returns with a Sumo Wrestler. Not quite what Ryoma expected, but the man says the Sumo Wrestler is soft and plump like he said (so he wasn't lying - he never actually said they were girls!). Ryoma says he's leaving, but the man is telling him he has to pay the fee of 10 Ryo. Choose the top option to refuse to pay. This leads to a fight against 3 Sumo Wrestlers.

The man apologises to Ryoma and says he actually is trying to run a legit business, with a brothel aimed at people who are into Sumo Wrestlers. Apparently there are a surprising amount of people who like this sort of thing.

The man gives you 3 Ryo as an apology. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

13: The Love-Hungry Man

Rakunai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and talk to the man by the river. The man says he loves to hang out around here, because it's such a nice spot, and that eating home-cooking here is always nice. Ryoma, thinking to himself, says this really would be a nice place to eat food he made himself. Choose the top option to eat. Next select your home meal (meals you make when cooking in Another Life). The man notices Ryoma's meal, asking if it's home-made. Ryoma tells him it is and the man says he envies Ryoma for having a meal prepared by his beloved wife! Ryoma tries to tell him it wasn't made by his wife, but the man doesn't listen, saying all men in the world yearn for a loving meal prepared by their wife. He says it's his dream to have one - he thought that dream would come true after he got married, but it didn't! Ryoma asks why his wife doesn't make a meal for him and he says he realised it after they got married - she's a really bad cook. He also says she's really scary - she'll probably kill him if he asks her to make a meal! The man says Ryoma has to be grateful to his wife, for making him such a lovely meal. Ryoma asks the man if he'd like to try some of his meal. After he eats with Ryoma, he says it was delicious - the taste of love is better than anything. Ryoma tells him he'll come by with more meals again. This starts the friendship gauge with him. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

14: The Careless Wife

Rakunai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and a woman will call out to Ryoma, asking if he's seen a purse she dropped in the area, but Ryoma hasn't seen it. She goes on to say she's always been careless. She says she needs vegetables for a meal and wishes there was someone who had lots of spare vegetables and is willing to share some. Ryoma says he'll give her some and she tells him any vegetables will do. Talk to her again and select the top option to give her vegetables. Give her any vegetable you like. You can get vegetables either at shops, like the Greengrocer in Fushimi, or by farming in Another Life. This starts the friendship gauge with her. She thanks Ryoma and rewards him with a Vitality Pill. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

16: The Barking Dog

Rakunai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and a dog barks at Ryoma. A woman arrives and tells Ryoma the dog spends all day and night barking and it's such a nuisance for everyone. But she says it won't be a problem soon, because the dog is going to be "dealt with" (put down). After she leaves, Ryoma tells the dog to shut up, or it'll be killed. Ryoma thinks he should give it something to chew on, to stop it from barking all the time - like a bone. Get hold of a bone and then come back to the dog. If you don't have a bone, the Pawn Shop in Rakunai sells them. Interact with the dog and select the top option to give it a bone. This begins the friendship gauge with the dog. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

17: The Beckoning Cat

Rakunai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and interact with the cat. The man talks to the cat, saying he's given it 1000 Mon, so now he's asking it to bring him good fortune ("Beckoning Cats" are those ceramic cats that wave and supposedly bring good fortune to the owner). Ryoma asks what he's doing, giving money to the cat. The man says this is no ordinary cat - It's a Beckoning Cat that brings good fortune. The cat turns around, then turns back to the man and gives him something. Ryoma isn't convinced by the whole thing, but the man doesn't care if Ryoma believes him or not. After he leaves, interact with the cat and select the top option to give it 1000 Mon. Ryoma gives it 1000 Mon and asks it to being him good fortune. The cat runs off for a moment, then returns with something - Whitebait. Ryoma, asks the cat if it wants to eat it, then gives it the fish. This begins the friendship gauge with the cat. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

28: The Mysterious Merchant

Rakugai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and interact with the wooden panel there. A man from behind the panel speaks to Ryoma, asking "do you have the goods?". Ryoma tells him he's got the wrong man, then says he's leaving but the man tells him he can't just let him leave after what he's heard and asks Ryoma to work with him in place of the other guy, who hasn't been showing up. The man then tells him that "the goods" are Tomatoes - he wants 10 of them - and says he'll pay Ryoma 2 Ryo for it. Ryoma says he'll get the tomatoes. When you have 10 Tomatoes (you can grow them in Another Life) go back and speak to him - select the top option to give him 10 Tomatoes. You receive 2 Ryo as payment. This starts the friendship gauge with the man. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

29: The Starving Cat

Rakugai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and talk to the cat. Ryoma sees that it's not well and supposes it's hungry. Choose the top option to give it a fish. This starts the friendship gauge with the cat. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

36: The Man Who Collects Junk

Mukurogai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and talk to the man. He asks Ryoma for something he doesn't want - apparently he collects random stuff that people don't want/need anymore. Choose the top option to give him something. This is exactly the same as the Junk-Child from Chapter 2 - you give him any junk you don't need. You can give him just about any item in the game except valuables and food/drinks.

After giving him an item, the friendship gauge with him starts. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

37: The Injured Dog

Mukurogai

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and talk to the dog. Ryoma notices it's injured. Select a medicine item in your inventory to give to the dog (any recovery medicine item will work - like Vitality Pills, Frenzy Pills, All-Purpose Pills). This starts the friendship gauge with the dog. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

39: Switched Bags

Fushimi

Mukurogai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 4

1- Go here and Ryoma sorts out the straps on his sandels. As he's doing that, 2 men arrive from opposite directions and bump into Ryoma. The 2 men dropped their bags and Ryoma picks up the first one he sees and gives it to one of the men. The man says he has to hurry over to Mukurogai and then leaves. After he leaves, the other man gets up and looks for his bag. Ryoma picks up the other bag on the floor and gives it to him. However, the man notices that this isn't his bag - this bag has a pistol inside! Ryoma accidently gave the bags to the wrong people. Ryoma says he'll go and get the man's bag back, then the man gives him the bag with the gun in it to give back to the other guy.

2- Go here and Ryoma sees the man from earlier. The man hands over the bag to a thug and apologises for being late. The thug seems pleased, getting the item out of the bag and saying with this gun he'll never lose to anyone again. But then he notices this isn't a gun at all, it's a chikuwa! Then two other thugs show up, with a young girl beside them, and they accuse the man of trying to play them for fools. The girl is the man's daughter, who was taken hostage - "So you don't care what happens to your daughter, huh!?", they ask. Ryoma then steps in and explains that the man's bag got mixed up with someone else's. Then a fight starts against the 3 thugs.

After the fight, the man thanks Ryoma and they exchange bags.

Ryoma looks at the chikuwa, saying it looks really nice. The bag has 5 of them inside and Ryoma wonders what he should do. Select the top option to not eat one and give them all back to the man (if you do eat one, you get a less valuable reward).

1- Go back here and speak to the man. Ryoma hands over the bag. The man thanks Ryoma and rewards him with Snake Skin. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

55: The Waiting Dog

Fushimi

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and talk to the dog. Ryoma notices it's unwell and supposes he should give it some food. Choose the top option to give it food. You can give it any food item in the game (strangely, you can even give the dog sake if you want). This starts the friendship gauge with the dog. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

56: The Filthy Cat

Fushimi

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and look at the cat. The cat falls into the water and Ryoma rushes over to save it. He notices both the cat and himself are filthy (turns out the water is dirty!), so he takes the cat to the nearby bathhouse to wash it. This starts the friendship gauge with the cat. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

57: To You Whom I Have Yet To See

Gion

You can do this after you have met Akari

1- Go here and Ryoma notices something on the ground - go and examine it. Ryoma notices it's a diary. Choose the top option to read it.

(note that in these letters, the gender is completely ambiguous - Ryoma guesses it's a girl, but it's not established in writing. As a result, I'm going to have to use "my crush" a lot in place of "he/she", to keep it ambiguous)

It reads:

"Lately my heart has been feeling like a cloudy sky. What should I do about this pain in my heart? It hurts so much. Whether I'm working, eating, sleeping or bathing, I'm always thinking of you. I know this love cannot be and I tell myself I have to give up on you, but it's impossible! I cannot think of anything but you! I love you!"

After reading that, Ryoma says "It seems the owner of this diary is in love" (no shit? Thank you, Sherlock Holmes). He continues to read:

"The more I put my feelings into words, the more painful it becomes. That's enough! It's time to put an end to this diary! I'm going to leave it at a shrine somewhere! But if someone picks it up and learns of how I feel, what will that person think? Will they laugh, saying I'm stupid, or will they say they understand? To you, who has picked up this diary - do you think my pain is normal? Or is it just foolish?"

Ryoma says he should write a reply in the diary. Choose the middle option to say "It's important".

Ryoma writes the following reply:

"It's important. Even if it's a love that seems impossible, so long as you keep going it could very well come to be one day. Good luck"

After this, leave the area and then return and examine the diary again (exit Gion, then come back).

Ryoma notices a reponse to his reply. It reads:

"Thank you! I'm surprised a complete stranger would be so encouraging! Thanks to you, I feel a lot braver now! I'll try my best for a bit longer! I can't handle a love through which I have to suffer!"

Ryoma wants to write another reply. Choose the top option to say "Start by learning a lot about this person".

Ryoma writes the following reply:

"Do you know the things this person likes and dislikes? It's like swordfighting - If you know what kind of guy your opponent is, you can predict his moves to a certain extent. That is important if you want to win."

Leave the area and then return and examine the diary again.

Ryoma notices a reponse to his reply. It reads:

"The moment I read your message, I was shocked. I didn't really know that much about my crush. So, like you suggested, I've been investigating the place where my crush lives and their belongings so that I can learn about what my crush likes and dislikes. In the middle of searching, my crush caught me and gave me a good scolding! My crush was so angry! Aaah, now it'll never happen. It's heart-breaking! I can't endure this! Alright, I've decided to just come straight out and confess to this person! Whether it's a success or a failure, my agony will be gone, so this is the end for our diary exchanges. It was short lived, but I had fun exchanging messages with you! Thank you for everything! ...But before that, I have to think of how I'm going to confess! The place has to be somewhere with a nice mood. I'm thinking the big shrine by Kamo River, where we've been having our diary exchanges. The problem is how I'm going to confess... My mind is completely blank! Would you give me a suggestion? How should I confess to get my crush to like me?"

Choose the top option to say "Being sincere in your confession is the best option!".

Ryoma writes the following reply:

"Just be genuine - conveying how you feel with sincerity in your words is the best thing to do. That's the only advice I can give you. Good luck"

Leave and then come back to see the girl there. He recognises her as Akari from the shrine. She's with the shinto priest from the same shrine. Then he thinks to himself "You mean she's the girl with love troubles, with whom I've been exchanging messages?". Ryoma hides himself and watches what goes on. Then he notices something seems weird... Turns out it's the priest who is confessing his love! It wasn't Akari's diary after all; it was the priest's. Akari says it's not possible between them, but asks if they can still be friends. After she leaves, Ryoma approaches the priest and asks him if he wants to go for a drink somewhere.

You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

59: The Revolutionary Chef

Gion

You can do this after you create a meal in Another Life

1- Go near here and a man starts smelling Ryoma. The man apologises for doing that so randomly, saying he could smell from his body that Ryoma is a single man who cooks meals himself at home. The man says he's a chef and asks Ryoma if he'll bring him some of his home made meals to try. The chef says he wants to create revolutionary new cooking and to do that he wants to try out meals made my men to give him some ideas. Ryoma says he'll bring him one of his home made meals. Speak to him and select the top option to give him one of your home made meals. The chef praises Ryoma's cooking, saying it's revolutionary and asks him if he'll bring him more. This begins the friendship gauge with him. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

60: The Fascinating Wife

Gion

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and talk to the woman standing around. She says she has a favour to ask of Ryoma - choose the top option to hear her out. She says there's something she wants really badly - a cucumber. Ryoma points out that she can just buy one from a greengrocer, but she says she only wants a cucumber given to her by Ryoma. Ryoma says he'll get her a cucumber. Talk to her and choose the top option to give her a cucumber. Then it gets a little... disturbing, I guess? She says "That length... That thickness... This is exactly what I wanted" (just listen to those unnecessary sound effects...). She rewards Ryoma with a Vitality Pill. She leaves, saying she wants to go and enjoy it. This begins the friendship gauge with her. You are also rewarded with 150 Dharma.

62: Flowers Wither, Then Bloom Once Again

Mibu

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and Ryoma sees a Joshi shouting at a couple of old people.

2- Go over to the old couple. The Joshi then kills their dog, then says the old couple are next. Then Ryoma steps in and a fight against the Joshi begins.

After the fight, the Joshi runs away. The old man tells Ryoma that's the second time that "Kazukichi" (the name of the dog) has been killed by a Joshi. He tells Ryoma that, until a while ago, they had a son called "Kazukichi" and the 3 of them lived together in Edo, but suddenly one day he was killed in front of them. They got a pet dog to try and bury their feelings on loneliness and named it after their son. He gives Ryoma a Double-Pilgrimage Talisman to thank him for saving them. The old man wonders where to bury the dog, then the old lady appears. Apparently Kazukichi loved cherry blossoms, so that would be a great final resting place for it. The old man asks Ryoma if he could find a nice spot under cherry blossoms.

Now, go to your garden in Another Life and look at the tree there (when you arrive back at the garden, Ryoma will comment about the tree there - then go over and look at it). Ryoma asks Haruka if this is a cherry blossom tree and she says it is - she says it used to bloom all the time, but it withered and has never grown since. Ryoma explains to Haruka about the old man and the dog and how he's looking for a spot under a cherry blossom tree to bury it. Haruka then says that she doesn't mind if the dog is buried here, under this tree.

2- Go back here and speak to the old man. Choose the top option to tell him you've found a place. The old couple bury their dog under the tree, then suddenly they notice the cherry blossom tree is blooming once again! You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

65: Ryoma, the Mother

Mibu

You can do this after completing substory 62: Flowers Wither, Then Bloom Once Again

1- Go here and Ryoma sees 3 children. One says they need one more person, then sees Ryoma walking by and calls out to him, asking him to play with them. They want him to play "House" with them. Ryoma says he's not interested and is about to leave, but then the girl starts crying. Ryoma supposes he should play with them after all - choose the top option. Ryoma tells them he's never played it before, so they tell him what it's aboutand tell Ryoma he's playing the role of the wife! Ryoma says a girl should play that role, like the girl on the right, but she says she's playing the role of the samurai. They begin the game and one of the girls says Ryoma is her mother, so he needs to go and cook something. Ryoma pretends to prepare a meal. You get a choice of 3 options, but it makes no difference what you pick. Next, the father returns. They all sit down to eat Ryoma's meal. You get another choice of 3 options, but again it makes no difference what you pick. Next, the samurai arrives and says she's here to collect their tax. After collecting the tax (or rice? apparently they're paid in rice in their fantasy world) the samurai leaves. Ryoma then asks why a samurai is going around collecting taxes, saying that's handled by tax offices, and he also points out there's no institution that is financed with rice (way to ruin their game, Ryoma... lol). The samurai tells Ryoma to shut up or she'll invoke her samurai right to kill them all! Then Ryoma tells her that right only applies when a samurai's honour is besmirched and doing it in other situations is just a crime. After that, Ryoma realises he may have ruined the game for them, but then the child and father seem happy with him! They thank Ryoma for playing with them, then 2 of them leave. Ryoma notices the girl who played the samurai is feeling down. She asks Ryoma if what he said was true and he tells her it is. But then she tells Ryoma that the samurai who often shows up at her house is always like how she played the role. Ryoma asks if he can meet this samurai, so she leads him back to her house. Ryoma sees the samurai and confronts him about his actions. A fight against him begins.

After the fight, Ryoma tells him that if he hears he's been doing this again, then he'll invoke the samurai right to kill against him! They thank Ryoma for his help. You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

66: The Man Who Can't Remember

Road to Kiyomizudera

You can do this when the road to Kiyomizudera opens up during the main story

1- Go here and talk to the man on the ground. Give him any recovery medicine item. When the man gets up, Ryoma asks what happened, but he says he can't remember. The man thanks Ryoma for helping him and rewards him with a Deadwood Branch. The friendship gauge with the man starts. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

67: The Boy Who Loves Vegetables

Mibu

You can do this after you are introduced to the "Another Life" part of the game

1- Go here and Ryoma sees a boy crying and his mother telling him off. Go and speak to the boy and he tells Ryoma about how much he loves vegetables, but his mother hates them so he doesn't get to have them much - apparently they just have tofu every day! Ryoma says he'll give the boy vegetables. Talk to the boy again and choose the top option to give him a vegetable. This starts the friendship gauge with the boy. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

8: Substitute Postman

Rakunai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 5

1- Go here and a postman rushes in Ryoma's direction. You get a choice of where to move to get out of his way, but it makes no difference what you pick. After the postman bumps into Ryoma, he injures his leg. He get's up saying he has no time to moan about the pain; he has to deliver these packages or his postman union might go bust! But as he runs off, he falls - the pain in his leg is too much. He asks Ryoma if he'll deliver his remaining 6 packages. Choose the bottom option to help him.

You now have 1 minute and 40 seconds to deliver the packages to these locations:

If you have fully upgraded your sprinting (via Dharma exchange), this is easy to complete with plenty of time to spare.

After delivering all the packages, the postman thanks Ryoma and rewards him with a Golden Stamp. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

9: The "Black Panther" Postman Group Appears!

Rakunai

You can do this after completing substory 8: Substitute Postman

1- Go here after completing substory 8 (you start here right after completing that substory, so you need to leave then return - go into Gion and then comeback). The postman from substory 8 appears, then a group of guys show up - they are the "Black Panther Postman Group" (got to love the shout out to the Kurohyou (Black Panther) PSP games). They are apparently the greatest postman group in Kyoto! Apparently they are out to destroy all other postman groups/unions so that all the post work goes to them. Ryoma asks what the Black Panther Postman Group wants with him - they say they saw Ryoma helping the postman before and said he's pretty good. There are rumours starting to go around that the Black Panther group is no longer the fastest there is, but this new guy (Ryoma) is! So they challenge Ryoma to a delivery competition. Ryoma says he's not interested, but the Black Panther group say they'll destroy the union that Kiyokawa (the postman Ryoma helped out in substory 8) is in if he doesn't compete. One of the members steps forward to be the one to challenge Ryoma. Whoever delivers 10 packages to customers first is the winner.

This picture shows the delivery locations:

This shouldn't be any problem if you have fully upgraded your sprinting.

After beating the Black Panther member, the group tells Ryoma that next time they meet, they'll show him their true power!

You are rewarded with 320 Dharma.

10: The Star of the Black Panther Group

Rakunai

You can do this after completing substory 9: The "Black Panther" Postman Group Appears!

1- Go here and Ryoma sees Kiyokawa talking with Makino, the star member of the Black Panther group. Makino tells Ryoma that he's his next opponent in a delivery competition. Whoever delivers 12 packages first is the winner.

This picture shows the delivery locations:

Again, with fully upgraded sprinting this shouldn't be a problem.

After beating Makino, Inamoto - Black Panther Captain - shows up. He tells Ryoma that next time, he will be his opponent.

You are rewarded with 340 Dharma.

12: The Hungry Sumo Wrestler

Rakunai

You can do this after meeting Yamasaki during the Chapter 5 main story

1- Go here and Ryoma sees a sumo wrestler on the ground. He complains that he's hungry. Give him any food item in the game. He talks to Ryoma and explains he's a low ranking sumo, so his wages aren't very good, so he can't afford to get lots of food, so he loses matches because he's hungry (because he's not at full strength), so he doesn't go up in rank. He asks Ryoma if he'll help him out by getting him food. Ryoma says he'll get him food. The friendship gauge with the Hungry Sumo Wrestler begins. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

19: The Dreaded "Kama" Guy

Rakugai

Rakugai

Mukurogai

Mibu

You can do this after meeting Yamasaki during the Chapter 5 main story

1- Go hear and listen to the 2 men having a conversation. They talk about a guy with a sickle in Mukurogai. Apparently everyone who's ever gone after him has never returned, because he's so tough.

2- Go here and hear the mother and child talking. Ryoma steps in and asks what's wrong. The mother says her husband went to Mukurogai to defeat the sickle guy, but he hasn't returned and she fears the worst. The child asks Ryoma to save his father. Ryoma says he'll go over there.

3- Enter Mukurogai via the gate and Ryoma bumps into someone. Ryoma tells him he's here to meet the sickle guy. The man leads Ryoma to him. This isn't quite what Ryoma expected - he was expecting a fighter who uses a sickle, but instead he meets a group of transvestites.

Time to explain what the hell's going on (it's yet another pun/play on words). Everyone mistakingly thought this guy in Mukurogai was a "Sickle (Kama) user". But it turns out he's just the commander of a group called "okama" - "okama" is a term for male transvestite and/or homosexual.

Ryoma tries to leave, saying this isn't how he rolls, then they attack him.

After the fight Ryoma explains he's just here to look for someone who came here a few days ago. Ryoma tells the man that his wife and child are waiting for him, so he should return home. But the man says he's not a father - he's "Konoha" and has decided to spend the rest of his life here. He says he was tired of the life he had, so he ran away from it all. The commander tells him if he had known he had a family he would never have let him in and tells him to go back to them.

Back at 2, the man tells Ryoma he's going to try hard to be a father again. He apologises to Ryoma for the trouble he caused him and gives him a Pot Sound Opportunity. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

4- After completing the substory, go here and speak with the commander. Ryoma gets a Super Rare Medical Soldier Card.

25: The Captain of the Black Panther Group

Rakugai

You can do this after completing substory 10: The Star of the Black Panther Group

After completing substory 10, go to your house in Another Life. When you go near the entrance to the house, a woman named "Hirakawa" - boss of the Black Panther group - speaks to Ryoma. She asks him if he wants to join the Black Panther group. But Ryoma refuses, saying he's not interested in becoming a postman. She then hands over a letter from Inamoto, issuing a challenge.

1- Go here after getting the letter and speak to the Black Panther group. Inamoto tells Ryoma the first of them to deliver 12 packages will be the winner.

This picture shows the delivery locations:

Personally, I advise turning around right from the start and going a different route. The race starts with both of you running north of the starting location (1), but turn around and start with the delivery location closest to the starting location (by the gambling den) and then keep going (west) from there. It's a quicker route than the way the game tries to force you to take.

After beating Inamoto, Hirakawa shows up and fires the 3 Black Panther members who raced (and lost) aganist Ryoma, saying she has no use for such slow postmen. She then tells Ryoma that in his next race, he will be the one who will be humilated. After she leaves, Ryoma asks the Black Panther members why she's so serious about having the fastest postmen and they tell him that she changed after her husband died - her husband is the one who created the group. Apparently he was a legendary postman - fastest in the land! But one day he was killed while he was working. A young postman was slow delivering something to an important samurai, and the samurai was about to kill the young man but he stepped in to protect the young man. That's why she hates slow postmen - a slow postman was responsible for her husband's death. She changed after that and now her mission to try to protect the group is destroying her. Inamoto asks Ryoma to save Hirakawa - by shutting down the Black Panther group. He tells him if he beats the best man in the group - Takeda - it will hopefully make her come to her senses.

You are rewarded with 360 Dharma.

27: The Injured Man With a Sense of Justice

Rakugai

You can do this after meeting Yamasaki during the Chapter 5 main story

1- Go here and speak to the man. Ryoma asks why he's being so restless, but the man says he's patrolling - he's currently on a mission. Then he sees a couple of guys confronting a woman. The man patrolling man steps in to stop them and they tell him this is none of his business, but he says it is - he is out to protect all who are in danger. He fights the two men, but it turns out this guy isn't much of a fighter and is taken down with ease. They leave after beating him up and the man asks Ryoma if he has something to heal his wounds. Give him any recovery medicine item. The man then explains to Ryoma how he's not actually part of any group, he just goes around to protect people because he feels it's the right thing to do. The friendship gauge with the man starts up. You are rewarded with 150 Dharma.

50: Black Panther Postman Group Conclusion

Fushimi

You can do this after completing substory 25: The Captain of the Black Panther Group

1- Go here and speak to Takeda. Ryoma challenges him to a delivery competition. Hirakawa shows up and Ryoma tells her that if he wins, she can no longer boast that the Black Panther group is the fastest in Kyoto. Hirakawa tells Ryoma there's no way Takeda will lose, because he's as fast as her husband was!

The one who delivers 12 packages first is the winner.

This picture shows the delivery locations:

You can do them in whatever order you like, but I did them in the order listed in the above picture.

After beating Takeda, Hirakawa get's upset, saying she tried so hard to protect the reputation of "fastest in Kyoto" after her husband's death, but she failed. Takeda tells her she should just disband the group, because there's no need for her for to be so upset anymore. She says she won't know what to do if she loses both her husband AND the Black Panther group. The other Black Panther members show up. Takeda tells her that there's no need to care about speed and she should give up on the Black Panther group, so her pain no longer continues, and then they can all form a new Postman group together - called "Hirakawa Postman Group". Takeda apologises to Ryoma for everything the group put him through and gives him a Snake Skin. You are also rewarded with 400 Dharma.

61: Ugliness and Beauty

Mibu

Rakunai

You can do this after meeting Yamasaki during the Chapter 5 main story

1- Go here and Ryoma hears a woman scream. A group of thugs are telling her to hand over all the store's money or they'll kill her. Ryoma is about to step in to stop them, but then a samurai appears and he easily takes down the thugs. The woman thanks him, but screams when he turns around to look at her. She regains her composure, thanking him again, then leaving.

2- Talk to the samurai. Ryoma praises his skill in taking out the thugs. The man asks Ryoma if one's face really is so important. He explains that everyone he saves always freaks out when they see his face. Ryoma tells the samurai that one's appearance isn't what's important; one's character is. Suddenly, a woman passes by as notices the samurai and seems to recognise him. "Is that you, Aguri?". The samurai recognises the woman as well - her name is "Suzu". He asks her where he's going and she tells him she's heading to Kamo River to meet with a man called "Ikesugi", because he has something important to discuss with her, apparently. After she leaves, Aguri runs off after her. Ryoma thinks to himself he should check out what's going on as well.

3- When you get here, Ryoma sees the woman standing alone. It seems Ikesugi is late. Aguri is watching from the bridge and Ryoma goes up to him. Suddenly, Ikesugi shows up. He proposes to her! She says they haven't know each other that long and asks why he wants to marry her - He says because she's beautiful and wants to look at her forever. She rejects his marriage proposal, saying she doesn't care about appearance; she cares about personality. Ryoma tells Aguri that he still has a chance with her now. Aguri says it's not possible, with his appearance. He also points out that he doesn't want to risk ruining the relationship he has with her at the moment. You then have a choice of 3 things to say to him - choose the bottom option to say "Believe in Suzu". Ryoma points out that she says she cares about personality, not looks. Aguri says he'll go and talk to Suzu now. Ryoma notices Ikesugi is still by the river and he says "She won't get away with this!". He runs off to her, saying he's going to make her regret rejecting him.

4- Go here and Ryoma sees Aguri injured, with Ikesugi and some guys standing over him. They are about to kill him, but Ryoma steps in to save him. He tells Aguri to take Suzu and get out of here. A fight then starts against Ikesugi and his men.

After the fight, Ikesugi and Aguri have a stand-off, with Aguri saying he'll never forgive him for trying to hurt Suzu. After Aguri wins his duel against Ikesugi, he confesses his love to Suzu and she reciprocates. Aguri is surprised, pointing out that he's ugly. She again says that she cares about personality. Aguri thanks Ryoma for everything he's done and rewards him with a Gion Hood. You are also rewarded with 400 Dharma.

63: The Distinguished Chef

You can do this after meeting Yamasaki during the Chapter 5 main story and after you have made at least 10 meals in Another Life

Go inside your house in Another Life to trigger this substory. Someone arrives at the house saying he has a favour to ask of Ryoma. Apparently there's this lord (called Okehazama) who is very obsessive when it comes to food and only eats the best meals. He says there's a rumour going around that there's often a lovely smell of food coming from this house, so this time Ryoma has been selected to make a meal for him. Choose the top option to make a meal. He tells Ryoma he wants him to make "Sturdy Grilled Fish". Apparently this lord kills anyone who makes a meal he feels isn't up to a good enough standard, so everyone is afraid to cook for him. Then the lord himself shows up, ready for Ryoma's meal. Now you have to make the meal.

Note that if you make a bad quality meal, you get a less valuable reward.

After Ryoma makes the meal, the lord tries it and says it's delicious! The lord thanks Ryoma for the meal and leaves. Ryoma is rewarded with a Dragon Whisker. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

64: A Bear Appears!

Mibu

You can do this after completing substory 61: Ugliness and Beauty

1- Go here and Ryoma hears a child saying a bear was here. Speak to the child and Ryoma asks if it's true he saw a bear and what the bear looked like. As he tells Ryoma about it, a bear appears behind Ryoma! The man and child run away and Ryoma fights the bear.

If you want my advice, use your pistol and just shoot at him from a distance, because this beast can do some SERIOUS damage to you and can kill you with one combo if you're not careful. Make sure you bring plenty of healing items for this fight.

After the fight, the man and child rush back, amazed Ryoma defeated a bear. The boy asks if he'll be able to beat a bear if he becomes a samurai. The man thanks Ryoma for saving them and rewards him with an Inviting Hat. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

20: The Girl in the Palanquin

Rakugai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 6

1- Go here and an old man calls out to Ryoma, saying he looks tough and asks him if he'll protect the palanquin, saying a young girl from a high class family is in there and is being targeted by a certain man (called Hayakaze). He asks Ryoma again if he'll escort the palanquin safely through Rakugai for him. Choose the TOP OPTION to accept.

2- Escort the palanquin here. If it loses all its health (indicated by the orange gauge), you lose. After you get the palanquin here, the old man thanks Ryoma, but then Hayakaze appears - the man who is trying to get hold of the girl. He asks her why she's trying to get away from him - after all, he loves her so much! He then fights Ryoma.

After the fight, the old man thanks Ryoma again and gives him a Crimson Jewel. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

24: The Reckless Repayment

Rakugai

Mukurogai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 6

1- Go here and Ryoma sees a man surrounded by a group of men trying to extort money from him. Choose the TOP OPTION to save him. As Ryoma is about to take them on, Ogita shows up. Ogita tells them they've got some balls to go up against the first and third captains of the Shinsengumi! After the guys realise who these 2 are, they say they are no match for them, even with their greater numbers, and they should get out of there!

Leave the area and then return to this location and speak to the man. He tells you those guys from earlier are causing trouble over in Mukurogai and asks Ryoma to come by and help out.

2- Go here and speak to the man again. He then leads Ryoma to another area and the guys from earlier gang up on him.

After the fight, the guy Ryoma saved earlier imitates Ogita's voice and calls out to them from around the corner. The guys make a run for it. Ryoma tries to go and thank "Ogita" for his help, but the guy is gone.

Ryoma returns to the Shinsengumi HQ and Ogita speaks to him, complaining to Ryoma he heard he went out to Mukurogai to take out those guys without him. Ryoma is confused - Ogita was there, after all!

You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

32: More Tattoos

Mukurogai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 6 and after you have completed substory 31: The Brawler Sumibozu

1- Go here and Sumibozu calls out to Ryoma. Ryoma notices he has more names tattooed on his body. Sumibozu tells him after his fight with Ryoma, he went around the country fighting with tough guys and has returned much tougher than he was before. He asks Ryoma if he'll fight with him again. Speak to him and choose the TOP OPTION to fight him.

After Ryoma beats him, he comments that Sumibozu has definitely become a lot tougher since last time. Sumibozu says he's going to head out and do more training, then return and challenge Ryoma once more. If he is beaten again, he says he'll shut down his services (no longer fighting people for money).

You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

49: The Definition of a Samurai

Fushimi

You can do this at the start of Chapter 6

You can only do this at Noon

1- Go here and Ryoma sees a foreigner (called "Tom") in samurai clothes speaking to a couple of samurai. He asks them if he can be a student to them, so he can learn to be a samurai. They say a foreigner can't be a samurai and that he should just go back to his own country. One of the samurai draws his sword and the other says he should run for it - but Tom says he won't, because a samurai doesn't run away. As he's about to attack Tom, Ryoma steps in to stop them. After the samurai leave, Ryoma tells Tom to not do that again. Tom asks Ryoma if he'll take him in as his student to be a samurai, since the other guys wouldn't. Ryoma asks why he wants to be a samurai so badly. Tom says they are allies of justice, saying when he saw one fighting for good he wanted to become one himself. Ryoma tells him becoming a samurai won't be easy, but Tom says he'll do anything to be one. Ryoma says he'll give him lessons. Choose the TOP OPTION to give him a lesson at the dojo.

After fighting Tom, Ryoma asks him if there's a part of him which thinks he can never become a samurai because he's not Japanese. Tom says there is, but he's not going to give up, saying it's possible for a foreigner to be a samurai too! He tells Ryoma he'll practice his swordsmanship and show up at this dojo again at some point. Ryoma mentions this dojo can only be used at noon.

2- Leave the area, then return and speak to Tom. Choose the TOP OPTION to give him a lesson at the dojo.

After fighting Tom, Ryoma mentions he's a lot more skilled than before. He says he'll go out and do more practice, then return once again.

Leave the area, then return back here again. Ryoma sees some kids around Tom. They say a foreigner can never be a samurai. After they get bored of making fun of Tom for trying to be a samurai, they leave. Talk to tom and choose the TOP OPTION to give him a lesson at the dojo.

After fighting Tom, Ryoma comments on how tough Tom has become. But Tom talks about the doubt he has, that Ryoma mentioned from the start - he says as good as he is getting with a sword, he has doubts about whether this really is the right path for him. He apologises to Ryoma and says he thinks he'll quit coming to this dojo. He says he'll quit the sword for the time being while he has a long hard think about things - like if he wants to aim to become a samurai. He asks Ryoma if he'll continue teaching him in the event he decides to continue trying to be a samurai.

3- Go here and Ryoma sees a samurai shouting at some children, threatening them, but then Tom shows up to stop him. Tom says he doesn't want to become a trash samurai like this guy! The samurai calls 8 more of his guys over. Tom tells the kids to get out of here, then tells the samurai he isn't going to run away - he wants to be a samurai who saves the weak from guys like them. Ryoma steps in and fights all 9 samurai alongside Tom.

After the fight, the kids show up again and thank Tom for saving them. They then apologise for the mean things they said to him, about him wanting to be a samurai. Tom tells them that their words did hurt, but thanks to them he feels he has discovered what it truly means to be a samurai. Ryoma comments that standing up against the strong to protect the weak makes him more of a true samurai than more of the "samurai" around in Japan these days! Tom says he's going to head back to his home country, to teach more people about the way of the samurai. Tom thanks Ryoma for everything, then leaves.

You are rewarded with 400 Dharma.

After completing this substory, you will find Tom standing outside the Shinsengumi HQ. Speak to him to get a Super Rare Support Soldier Card.

21: Samurai Interview

Rakugai

Mibu

You can do this after Inoue asks you to investigate about Sakamoto Ryoma in the main story

1- Go here and Ryoma hears a cry for help. A newspaper seller approaches Ryoma and says he's being pursued. Some Ishin-Shishi show up and fight Ryoma.

After the fight, they run off and the newspaper seller says "You're Saito Hajime, the captain of the 3rd Shinsengumi unit, aren't you!?". The man asks Ryoma if he'll let him interview him. The man thanks Ryoma (even though he didn't actually say he accepts!) and says he'll make preparations for the interview, saying he'll be waiting for Ryoma outside the Shinsengumi HQ.

2- Go here and Ryoma sees the newspaper seller being confronted by a Shinsengumi soldier. The man explains that Ryoma is going to meet him there, but the soldier says there's no way this guy is acquainted with the 3rd captain! Ryoma steps in and tells the soldier the man is telling the truth. They then proceed with the interview.

Before they begin, he explains that the interview is to get the dirt on the Shinsengumi - he doesn't believe the Shinsengumi are as bad as the rumours suggest (with the whole "Wolves of Mibu" thing and all). He then asks Ryoma a series of questions.

He first asks Ryoma about killing people, something the Shinsengumi is known for. Choose the BOTTOM OPTION. Ryoma says it is the duty of a Shinsengumi soldier, but he doesn't like killing people - he will only kill in unavoidable situations.

Next, he asks Ryoma for a message to the Ishin-Shishi. Choose the BOTTOM OPTION. Ryoma says "don't make your mothers cry" and they should hurry back to their home towns and be good sons.

Next, he asks Ryoma about his taste in women. Choose the TOP OPTION. Ryoma says someone with whom he is compatible.

Next, he asks Ryoma what the Shinsengumi is to him. Choose the TOP OPTION. Ryoma says it's a waypoint to being the strongest and the men here continue to reach greater heights.

Finally, he asks Ryoma what people on the streets must do to deal with being watched by Shinsengumi members. Choose the TOP OPTION. Ryoma says so long as you have a clear conscience you have nothing to worry about.

After the interview, he thanks Ryoma and rewards him with a Dragon Eye. You are also rewarded with 300 Dharma.

34: The Ghost of a Warrior

Mukurogai

You can do this at the start of Chapter 7

You can only start this substory at Noon or Evening

1- Go near here and Ryoma hears two men talking a rumour that the ghost of a warior appears here every night.

Return here at night time (progress through the main story a bit more). Ryoma sees the ghost that the men were talking about earlier. The ghost challenges Ryoma to a fight and Ryoma accepts.

After Ryoma wins, the warrior praises Ryoma's skills saying it's been a long time since he lost a fight! Ryoma asks if he really is a ghost. The warrior says of course he isn't! Ryoma talks about the rumour of a ghost and the warrior says he comes by here every night because tough guys often pass through and he wants to challenge them to fights - he had no idea about the rumour of a ghost. The warrior says he'll stop coming here from now on, now that he's had the good feeling of a loss. Apparently he's a well-known warrior and had never experienced a proper loss - only losses he had were when opponents used unfair means such as outnumbering him 10-to-1. He wanted to experience a fair loss, so he went around searching for great fighters. He said he was worried he'd never find a fighter tougher than he is, but thanks to Ryoma he's achieved his objective. As the warrior leaves, he drops something. Ryoma picks up the Koi Amulet, but when he tries to give it back the warrior is gone. You are rewarded with 350 Dharma.

43: Black Ships? We're Being Invaded

Fushimi

You can do this at the start of Chapter 7

You can only do this at Noon

1- Go here and Ryoma hears a guy telling another guy that he's heard there's a "Black Ship" near here.

Leave the area and then return to this area Ryoma sees a crowd of people. They see a black ship with a foreigner aboard and think he's come here to kill them all. Ryoma asks the man who he is, but he collapses to the ground, saying he's seasick. Ryoma wonders what could cure him of his seasickness and says he should ask around.

Talk to the onlooker near this area and he tells Ryoma he's heard a good way to get rid of seasickness is drinking.

Talk to the foreigner again and choose the TOP OPTION to take him for a drink.

Sadly, that didn't rid him of his seasickness, so Ryoma says he should ask around again for more ideas.

2- Talk to the onlooker here and she tells Ryoma she's heard exercise is a good way to get rid of seasickness.

Talk to the foreigner again and choose the TOP OPTION to give him training. You now fight the foreigner at the dojo.

Sadly, that didn't help him either, so Ryoma says he should ask around again.

3- Talk to the onlooker here and he tells Ryoma he's heard eating dried plums helps with seasickness. If you don't have a Dried Plum in your inventory, you can buy one from location 4 on the map above - Ichikuraya.

When you have a Dried Plum, go back to the foreigner and choose the TOP OPTION to give him the plum.

This worked and he is now rid of his seasickness! He thanks Ryoma for his help, then Ryoma asks why he came here in the first place. He says he came here to open up the country to the west for foreign trade. He introduces himself to Ryoma as "Mushu Pony" (not sure why they didn't just use the name "Matthew Perry", since that's who this guy is supposed to be - he even looks exactly like the real Matthew Perry). He says the first thing he wants to bring back over to the west is Dried Plums, saying they don't have anything like that where he's from! Ryoma shows him where he can buy them from, then Pony thanks him, but then some guys show up to confront him. They are more guys who hate foreigners and want them away from the country. A fight against them begins.

After the fight, Pony gives Ryoma a Precision Machine, then heads off on his boat. You are also rewarded with 350 Dharma.

33: The Enlightened Man

Mukurogai

.

You can do this at the start of Chapter 10 and after you have completed Substory 32: More Tattoos

1- Go here and Ryoma sees Sumibozu again. He's got a lot more tattoos than he had before and also has shaved his head, saying he's been doing a lot of mental training. He says he's ready to challenge Ryoma one last time. Talk to him and choose the TOP OPTION to accept his challenge.

After Ryoma beats him, he says he'll stop his services and that while mental training, he found something worth doing. He thanks Ryoma for helping him to find enlightenment and gives him a Haisui Talisman. You are also rewarded with 400 Dharma.

After completing the substory, go to the bottom of the steps near the entrance to the Shinsengumi HQ in Mibu and talk to him to get a Super Rare Attack Soldier Card. Note that he does not appear until after the story event in the Shinsengumi HQ (after Hijikata tells Ryoma to go to the docks in Fushimi).

After completing all 67 substories and every Battle Dungeon mission, go to the Battle Dungeon reception to trigger an event (triggered automatically after completing the final battle dungeon mission, if you have already completed the substories). The receptionist tells Ryoma of a man with great skill and wants Ryoma to help deal with him.

When you are ready, select the final battle dungeon mission (20: Defeat Toyotomi Hidebu). When you enter the room where you faught Toyotomi, an event is triggered and you fight Amon Genjuusai.

After defeating him, leave the Shinsengumi HQ area, then return and go to the reception and Ryoma will be told about a challenge to a fight from Amon.

Go to Kiyomizudera and fight Amon Genjuusai again.

This fight is no joke. This is easily the hardest fight in the game, so come prepared (plenty of healing items, etc).

After defeating him you get the Enchanted Sword that Time Forgot weapon.
