Arena
Overview
You can freely participate in the arena any time from Chapter 9 onwards. At first, only 2 tournaments are available but as you progress through the game and meet certain conditions, other tournaments become available. In some of the tournaments, you may freely choose the type of weapon you want to use (but this cannot be changed during the tournament - e.g. if you select Two Sword style at the start you can only use that style for the whole tournament), but in other tournaments you are forced to use a certain style. In the final tournament - "Peerless" - you can use your own weapons (whereas in all the other tournaments you are forced to use the arena's own weapons they provide for you). There are 3 rounds in each tournament. After winning all 3 rounds, you are rewarded with money and EXP. In addition, you also get an item reward. There are 4 different items you can receive in each tournament. See the table below for the item drop rates.

When you select a tournament, you can see all the fighters participating in the tournament (besides Kiryu). If you're looking for a particular fighter to appear, you can exit out of this screen and continue to re-select the tournament until the fighter appears in the list (each time you select a tournament, the fighters are randomised).
In the table below, under the various weapon columns, if the cell is green it means that option is available in the tournament. If it is red, it means it is not available. "Own weapons" means you can use the weapons you have equipped. If this cell is red, it means you are forced to use the arena's own weapons in the tournament.

Arena Fighting
Fighting in the arena is mostly the same as fighting in regular combat, but there are a few differences. You win when you get your opponent's health down to 0. In the arena, there are certain heat actions you cannot use. For example, you cannot use the brawler environment heat actions like Wall Attack Mastery and Platform Attack Mastery. Also, you cannot use recovery items. Instead, after each round in the tournament your health will recover by 30%. Your heat gauge will carry forward into the rest of the tournament (e.g. if you fully build up your heat gauge in the first round, your heat gauge will still be full at the start of the second round). Because of the heat action limitations in the arena, the brawler style lacks a lot of its usual advantages.
Basics
For tournaments in which you can choose your style, pick whichever style you are most comfortable using. Bear in mind that your enemies will be using weapons so you won't be able to defend effectively using the brawler style. Combine that with the fact you can't use many brawler heat actions in the arena and you have a good reason to avoid using this style. However, it does have the obvious advantage of being able to grab enemies. You could try rolling around and grabbing enemies from behind. Remember, some of the enemies you'll encounter can be very challenging, so approach the fights with some strategy and don't jump in spamming the attack button.
Cliff Edge
Usually, there is a barrier around the edge of the battlefield. But in this tournament, the barrier is removed. This means it is possible for someone to fall off the edge, which would result in an instant defeat for the one who falls. Be particularly careful when fighting wrestler enemy types in this tournament, who can easily throw you off the edge. The greatsword is a useful style for this tournament - due to its attack range you can attack the wrestler types from a safe distance. Also, the greatsword is able to force enemies backwards due to its power, so it's effective at forcing enemies off the edge of the battlefield.
Sword Hell / Intense Freeze / Scorching Blaze
In these tournaments, there are special environmental hazards you need to watch out for. In Sword Hell, swords will periodically pop up from the floor, causing damage to anyone they hit. Keep an eye on the floor during this tournament - it will be clear when and where the swords pop up (you'll get a couple of seconds to react before they do), so get off that section of the battlefield before they do so. In the Intense Freeze tournament, icicles will fall from the ceiling. Keep an eye out for shadows appearing on the floor - this shows where the icicles will fall, so make sure you aren't standing under it. In the Scorching Blaze tournament, stay away from the sides of the battlefield - if you get too close, you will get burned.
Environment Damage
Tournament (Hazard) | Hazard Damage |
---|---|
Sword Hell (Swords) | 100 |
Intense Freeze (Icicles) | 60 |
Scorching Blaze (Fire) | 100 |
Enemy Growth
Generally speaking, enemies will be the same no matter how many times you defeat them. However, there are a few fighters who improve after you beat them a certain number of times. There are 4 fighters in the arena who will improve and the details can be seen in the table below. Once the conditions are met, the health and attack of these enemies improves. The best example of this is Wada Yuzo. He is usually a fairly weak but becomes a dangerous opponent once his upgrade conditions are met. If you want to fight some of the toughest opponents in the arena, meet the conditions below and fight them again.
Their appearance does not change, but their health and attack increases a lot. If you challenge them again after their upgrade, you'll notice the difference.
Enemy growth conditions
Enemy | Conditions | Health change | Fighting changes |
---|---|---|---|
Hozoin Inshun | - Defeat Inshun 5 times - Win the Peerless tournament |
From 2000 to 3000 | All stats increase |
Kumomaru | - Defeat Kumomaru 10 times - Win the Peerless tournament |
From 900 to 2200 | All stats increase |
Kamiya Sotaro | - Defeat Kamiya 10 times - Win the Swordmaster Contest tournament |
From 800 to 2400 | Moves like Yoshioka Seijuro |
Wada Yuzo | - Defeat Wada 10 times - Defeat Komaki Sozaemon 1 time |
From 500 to 850 | Becomes a fearsome opponent and moves like Komaki |
Fighters List
There are 50 arena fighters in this game. For some opponents, you must meet certain conditions in order for them to appear in tournaments. See the table below for full details. If the cells is green, it means the fighter appears in that tournament. If it is red, they do not appear. If there is a number in the green cell (e.g. 1 or 2), then see the "conditions" column in the table, because it means a specific condition must be met before that fighter appears in that tournament. To save space, the tournament column headers use letters instead of names. Below are the tournaments to which the letters correspond.
