Shops & Restaurants

Shops

There are 8 shops in the game. Besides the peddler, who appears from 10-8 onwards, there are 3 shops in Gion and 4 in Rakugai. With the exception of the peddler, all shops are available from chapter 5 onwards. However, as you progress through the story new items will become available to buy at many shops.

None of the items are time-limited (i.e. you can buy all items regardless of the time of day). If you run out of space in your inventory while in exploration mode, you can use save points to transfer items to your item storage.

You can hold a maximum of 15 items at one time. Transfer items to your item storage using save points.

Item Types

There are a lot of items available in this game, which can be classified into 5 different types (see below). Regular items and valuables can be checked on the inventory screen on the pause menu. Weapons and armour can be checked on the equipment screen on the pause menu. Valuables cannot be bought from anywhere besides from the Peddler. Besides this, valuables can be obtained as a reward for completing training or requests.

When navigating the item storage, you can use to switch to your stored items and to switch back to your current inventory. While navigating the item storage menu, you can use the directional buttons (left and right) to switch between item categories. You can also use to change the ordering of items in your stored items list.

Item Classifications

Consumable Items

Many of the regular items available in the game are recovery items. Examples of this are medical items such as vitality pills and frenzy pills. Turtle food is also classified in this category, however if Kiryu eats this food he will lose health (Nori is the only exception to this - that turtle food item recovers a bit of health rather than takes health away).

Other Items

This refers to all regular items than cannot be consumed. For example, this includes materials for use at the blacksmith, ingredients required for inventions, gifts you can give to the yujo, and items that can be sold at the pawn shop for a high price.

Valuables

You can check your valuables by pressing on the inventory screen. All kinds of items can be found in this category, such as storage locker keys, theatre tickets, revelation pictures, blacksmith recipe books, and training documents.

Weapons

Items that can be equipped as weapons. The types of weapon are longswords (including wooden swords), greatswords (including clubs), shortswords, and special weapons. See below for details about weapon attributes.

Attack Power The power of the weapon. The higher this number, the more damage this weapon does with each attack.
Attack Force The force with which the weapon strikes the enemy. The lower this number, the more likely it is your weapon will bounce off an opponent's guard.
Attack Speed How quickly Kiryu swings the weapon. The four speeds, from slowest to fastest, are Slow, Normal, Fast, Super.

Armour

Items that can be equipped as protective gear. There are two types of armour - body armour and protection. The latter includes protective gear for the head and legs. You are able to equip 3 items at one time - 1 body armour item and 2 protection items. There are 4 different categories of protective power, as outlined below. The number for each of these categories refers to the damage reduction percentage.

Impact Defence against non-bladed weapon attacks
Blade Defence against bladed weapons
Bullet Defence against firearms.
Fire Defence against fire attacks.

Restaurants

Like with shops, there are 8 restaurants in total in the game. Note that you cannot order food or drink when Kiryu is at full health. Ordering food and drink at restaurants will both restore Kiryu's health and reward you with experience points. Of the 8 restaurants, 4 only sell drinks.

A word of caution for those aiming for full completion: at some of these restaurants, you can purchase items as well as order them. Consuming these purchased items do not count towards restaurant completion. Only items under the "food/drink" category on the tables below count towards completion. The items under the "items" category do not count.

You cannot order food or drink when Kiryu is at full health. If you want to order food/drink, you can use an Empty Stomach Pill to lower your health.

Restaurant Completion Note

For restaurant completion, there are 8 restaurants with a total of 71 items to order for 100% completion. From the start you can see the name of the restaurant on the completion menu, but the items for each will display question marks until you order them.

Note that ordering an item at one restaurant will count towards completion at other restaurants if they sell the same item. For example, the unrefined sake can be ordered at 3 restaurants, the Nada Refined Sake can be ordered at 4 restaurants. Ordering that at one restaurant marks it as complete for all restaurants at which the item can be ordered.

This means that, though there are 71 items on here, you actually only need to order 60 items to get 100% across all restaurants.

Even before you can access the Riverside Tea House, you can get completion on some of the items by ordering them at other restaurants.

Other Items

This section has information regarding the theatre tickets you can receive, as well as items you can obtain via mahjong and the gambling den prize exchanges. These don't cost you any money, but in the case of the prize exchange items you can purchase the chips used for exchanging. Also, there is a "Used Goods Buyer" in Rakugai to whom you can sell items (except equipment). You can make use of that guy if you want to offload some stuff.

Theatre Tickets

You can watch various shows at the theatre in Rakugai. However, you cannot watch any shows without a ticket. To get tickets, you must order a certain number of times at restaurants. See the table below for details.

Prize Exchange Items

You can exchange chips/tags for prizes via mahjong and the gambling den - chips for the former and wooden tags for the latter. Regardless of where you earn the tags (whether in Gion or Rakugai) all of them can be exchanged at the gambling den. The same applies to mahjong chips (chips earned in Rakugai can also be used in Gion, and vice-versa).

The exchange rate is different for chips and wooden tags. The former has a rate of 10 chips per 1 mon, while the latter has a rate of 1 chip per 1 mon.
